Get Ready for Sowing Season Now

Depending on where you farm in Western Australia, you’re likely dealing with a narrow sowing window. The last thing you want is to spend any of that critical time fixing unexpected tractor mechanicals. It’s why our AgKing tractor experts consistently recommend using this time of year to perform crucial routine tractor servicing and checks.

This guide covers the essential checks your tractor and implements need before the season begins. Follow these steps and you’ll minimise farming downtime, reduce repair costs, and give your crop the best possible start.

Why Pre Season Tractor & Parts Checks Matter

Your tractor is about to enter its busiest stretch of the year. You’ll need consistent horsepower, reliable hydraulics, accurate seed placement and long hours of operation. And you need to deliver them all under time pressure, because here in Western Australia, timing is everything. Once the opening rains arrive, you often have less than 24 hours to start sowing. The last thing you want is a mechanical failure holding you back.

If your farm is in the wheatbelt, you’ll be relying on steady power for deep ripping or seeding. If you’re in the Great Southern, your focus is likely on strong hydraulics to consistently penetrate those clay soils. So, let’s look at what needs to be done to ensure your machinery maintains great working conditions.

Seed Sowing Tractor Maintenance Checklist for WA Farmers

1. Engine Power & Load Readiness Testing

Ensure your tractor is up for the challenge by testing the engine under load. Run the tractor at a working RPM for at least 15 minutes. During that time, listen out for any signs of a power drop. Keep your eye on the temperature gauge and ensure it remains constant throughout. Any inconsistencies here are a sign you need to book a tractor service.

2. Hydraulic System – High-Demand Preparation

Your tractor implements rely on smooth-performing hydraulics to lift, fold and control sewing depth. Pressure-test under load, observe the cylinder’s responsiveness, and keep a close eye out for any signs of leaks. Dirty hydraulic oil or slow lift cycles are common signs of an impending mechanical failure.

3. Power Take-Off Function

Any power take off (PTO) failure during seeding will result in immediate forced downtime. Test the PTO speed accuracy. Look for any spline wear (degradation of teeth on a shaft). Take note of the guards and ensure they’re correctly fitted. If there’s chatter, vibration or visible signs of wear, fix it now, and not during your first day of sowing.

4. Ballast, Weight Distribution and Tractor Set-Up

Incorrect tractor ballast significantly compromises your tractor’s performance, leading to reduced efficiency, increased fuel consumption, excessive component wear, potential soil damage, and serious WHS risks. Check your wheel weights and ensure they are balanced and evenly distributed between the front and rear. Remember to also adjust the tyre pressure to allow for deep ripping or seeding. Aim for lower pressure to minimise soil impact – you want to encourage water infiltration to get the best out of your crop.

5. Calibrate for Correct Seed Depth

Even the most advanced air seeder will struggle to deliver uniform seed placement if your tractor isn’t correctly calibrated. Three critical factors directly affect your seeding accuracy:

1. Maintaining a consistent speed

Minor fluctuations in speed can result in seed placement variances of up to 15mm, which is enough of an inconsistency to affect germination. Light, sandy soils can handle faster speeds, whilst clay soils, which are more difficult to penetrate, will require a slower pace.

If you don’t have cruise control, do a test run across typical soil types in your paddock. Monitor your speed consistency and adjust your approach accordingly.

2. Calibrating the linkage height

Your tractor’s three-point linkage creates a solid base for seeder stability. Incorrect linkage height results in a see-saw effect as the seeder moves across undulating terrain, resulting in depth variations that compromise your season.

Check that the tractor’s lower links are level from side to side and keep them stabilised with the lateral sway chains or check chains.

3. Ensuring an even hydraulic response

Work components, contaminated oil and/or incorrect settings can all lead to inconsistent hydraulic pressure, in turn compromising seed placement. It won’t matter how good an operator you are – if your tools aren’t looked after, they won’t look after you.

Check your hydraulic oil level and condition. Replace hydraulic filters as per the tractor manufacturer’s schedule. Test your hydraulics by raising and lowering the implement several times while stationary.

Quick & Straightforward Tractor & Implement Checks

Run these quick basic checks and balances to ensure your equipment remains in good working order and reduce the need for any regular maintenance:

  • Grease all moving points
  • Check shear bolts and blades
  • Inspect PTO shafts and guards (replace damaged guards immediately)
  • Tighten bolts, pins, and linkage points
  • Make sure everything spins freely without wobble or noise
  • Clean air filters
  • Remove crop residue from implements
  • Ensure engine oil is topped up
  • Check coolant levels to prevent overheating
  • Drain off any old diesel and clean the filter if required
  • Inspect hoses and belts for cracks, bulges and wear & tear

When to Book a Pre-Season Tractor Service in Western Australia

If, during your maintenance checks outlined above, you notice any of the following, we highly recommend a pre-season tractor servicing.

  • Declining hydraulic responsiveness
  • Poor engine pull under load
